Forward Deployed Engineer

  • Independent contributor partner
  • Fully remote
  • Global

Opens as we grow

This role isn't open yet. We open a role once there's real work behind it, the same way we run a Sprint. It stays on the ladder so you can see where you'd fit as we grow.

About SimplyCubed

SimplyCubed is an AI automation business. We deliver custom AI agents trained on a customer's own data and wired into the tools they already run, live in 2 to 5 weeks rather than the six months and $50K+ an enterprise build demands. Our agents take over real, repetitive work across sales, support, and operations: qualifying leads, resolving tickets end to end, and moving data between systems like Slack, HubSpot, Intercom, Zendesk, and Notion. Every agent ships with scoped access, audit logging, and human-in-the-loop controls, a discipline that comes from our founder's background running security for finance and payments companies.

We run a productized model: a repeatable offering delivered the same disciplined way every time, not bespoke project work. We operate as a fully remote, global team of people, specialists, and agents. We value quality over volume, systems that improve themselves over time, and the kind of methodical thinking that catches a problem before it reaches a customer.

The role

This role is different in kind from our internal engineering roles, and we want to be straight about that. Instead of building the system from the inside, you are embedded with a customer, you own the outcome of their deployment, and you ship production code on the front line to get them there.

"Forward deployed" here is about context, not geography. We work remotely, and this role means embedding in a customer's problem and owning their result, not sitting in their office. It is the most advanced tier of the capability ladder, and we pitch it that way: the coding bar is a given, and ownership and comfort with ambiguity are what set the role apart.

Work with us at the commitment that fits you, full-time, part-time, or per engagement, always as an independent partner and always fully remote.

What you'll do

  • Run discovery and scoping directly with the customer, so you understand the real problem before a line of code is written
  • Deliver inside the customer's environment: design and ship the systems that make their deployment succeed
  • Be the primary technical point of contact for the engagement, for their team and ours
  • Translate ambiguous business needs into shipped systems, deciding what to build when the requirements are not yet clear
  • Navigate real enterprise constraints: SSO, legacy systems, SOC 2, data residency, and the security expectations that come with them
  • Feed patterns across deployments back into the product, so each engagement makes the next one faster

Who you are

You are a builder and a communicator in equal measure, and you measure yourself by what shipped, not what was assigned:

  • A strong hands-on engineer. The coding bar is real, and you ship production code on the front line. It is necessary, but on this role it is not the differentiator.
  • Radical ownership of outcomes, not tasks. You own the customer's result rather than a ticket queue, and you carry it across the line.
  • A high tolerance for ambiguity. You can take a vague, real-world problem and decompose it into something shippable, fast, without waiting for a perfect spec.
  • Communication range from executive to engineer. You can hold a room with a customer's leadership and then go deep with their engineers, often in the same day.

Nice to have

Prior experience as a forward deployed, solutions, or customer-facing engineer is a strong plus, as is having shipped inside regulated or enterprise environments with their security and compliance expectations. None of it outweighs owning the outcome and working effectively when the problem is ambiguous.

This is the most advanced tier of the capability ladder. The internal roles, Agent Skills Engineer, AI Integration Engineer, and Applied AI Engineer, build toward it, and people who want the front line can grow into this seat.

How we work

  • Fully remote, asynchronous-friendly, global
  • Direct collaboration with the founder, with real autonomy once direction is set
  • Independent partners, not payroll staff, with the same investment in everyone
  • Quality over count: one deployment landed cleanly beats three left half-finished
  • Clear documentation and SOPs as a core deliverable, not an afterthought

Where this role sits

This is one tier of a capability ladder that runs from validating what our agents depend on up to owning a whole customer outcome. We meet you at the tier that fits you now and grow with you as the work and your capability line up.

  1. Agent Skills Engineer Validate and harden the skills, tools, and integrations our agents rely on.
  2. AI Integration Engineer Build and own the integration layer those agents run on.
  3. Applied AI Engineer Design, evaluate, and ship whole agent workflows in production.
  4. Forward Deployed Engineer You are here Own a customer's outcome end to end, embedded in their context.

Per-outcome pay

Every role here is an independent contract role. We don't set your hours and we don't set your targets, so we can't honestly put a number on this page. How much you earn follows how much you choose to take on. SimplyCubed never pays by the hour. You're paid per outcome, for a delivered result that meets its acceptance criteria. How you meet them is yours to decide. One of them is the turnaround you agree to when you claim a task. We share the rates with you before you take on any work.

You earn a share of the fee on every sprint you deliver. The delivery is yours, and so is the outcome it gets paid against.

To apply

Tell us about a time you owned a customer outcome end to end: the ambiguous problem you walked into, what you shipped, and how you carried it across the line. We care more about how you think than about a polished résumé.
